Make a "Sunday" on a Wednesday

I love to quilt, knit, and sew. But since my writing career has taken off and now I'm either writing or marketing, I haven't much time for all my other passions. Every now and then I manage. For instance, each one of my books has it's own tablecloth for displays and signings. I've made them in color and fabric appropriate for each book cover. People always comment and some come to my table to look because they are drawn by the color or design of the simple cloth.

I go to Civil War reenactments with my two middle grade historical fiction to present to kids and sell my books. I dress in period clothing. One time in Florida I noticed a lot of re-enactors wearing the same type of vest or shawl. I'd not seen one of these before. The garment is called a Sontag, German for Sunday. It's a little sweater like affair that goes over the bodice and gives the dress a clean fresh appearance for Sunday. They had all made their own and said the directions were free on line. I came home, looked it up and got out the knitting needles. I made it in one evening! I love this little thing. It is exactly the second layer I've needed at many events when the wind blows or the temperature drops. I think I'll make one in another color. This is the website I used and there are some good pictures of how it's worn and used. Have fun clicking those needles.

  1. That is awesome!
I'd have to buy one as I learned to crochet but never mastered knitting.
    Thanks for sharing.

    1. If you look, there might be a crocheted version somewhere, Pammer. I know I currently crochet faster than I knit. :)

    1. I agree, Britney, but I do wonder how long it would take to make. :)

  3. I can see all sorts of possibilities for this garment. Around Thanksgiving I get yarn fever. Now I know what to do. Thanks for sharing this idea.

  4. That's very interesting! Does it fasten at the back? Or how do you put it on?

  5. I like it. Kind of a combo sweater/shawl. As another non-knitter, I'll have to look for a crochet pattern. Thanks for sharing.

    1. I was thinking along the lines of that description too, Lora. Let us know if you find the crochet pattern. :) I'm sure there are plenty who'd love to see it too.

  6. Crystal,

like the shawl. Can't say I'm much on knitting though. I tried on occasion. Even did the crocheting but didn't get far there. If only I could make it out of wood with a power tool... other wise, I guess I need to find someone to make it for me.

    1. I agree. This is a great link that Deanna shared with us. Perhaps you can swap woodwork for yarn-work with someone. :)

  7. There are also free crochet instructions for the sontag available on line. It is actually a very large triangle. The point is at your lower back. Then you wrap the other two around your shoulders like a shawl. Criss cross them in front and then tie them together in back over the point. Some of them are fancier and have buttons on the ends to button on your back. I knitted mine in a few hours.
