"Back" to School

Seems the wrong title for June as most schools are letting out for the summer, but when I say back, I don't mean "returning", I mean "reversing" or going back in time. Just over a hundred years. I was recently on a long drive in southern Alberta, Canada when we stopped at a small town to stretch our legs. I've been through Claresholm, Alberta a hundred times, but it's been a while since I took a look at their historical sites. Come along for the tour!

This is an old Canadian Pacific Rail car, the first thing you see when you step out of your own car.
And this is the old station.

Next door to the station is a small schoolhouse that was built in 1903.

The inside was a treat!

And after school you can go "home" to your one room cabin.

Note the snowshoe hanging by the window and the sled with the pelt attached--more evidence of location. :)

This last one is for laundry. Looks fun, doesn't it!

Thanks for joining me today! What is one of your favorite innovations of the last hundred years?

  1. Absolutely charming! I love old schoolhouses since I am a former teacher. I'll keep an eye out for this place the next time I'm up in Alberta. Favorite innovations? I'm not sure it's my favorite, because it can be sweet and sour, but I do like typing better than handwriting everything so the typewriter/computer. Argh, did I say that?!

    1. I must admit to loving the ease of editing and rewriting that computers provide! :) And for research as well.

  2. The very first school I attended at the ripe old age of 4, they only had an intake every 2 years, would compare favourably.

I LOVE my washing machine. It's such a happy, time saving device. It even gives me a song when it's finished a load.

    1. Wow, intake every two years? That would make things interesting.
I must admit to loving my washing machine too! I can live without my dryer, especially in the summer when I hang most my clothes anyways...but I would be constantly washing clothes trying to keep up with my kids! I decided the Lord put me on the earth at this time so I have time to both raise a family and write! :)
