Whispers in Wyoming Horse Interview and Free Book

Good Saturday morning STT readers. This is a first for me. I've never interviewed a horse, but it sounded like fun. And I like horses. Let me tell you about the humans first. Danni Roan, Kari Trumbo, Lisa M. Prysock, and Rachel Skatvold are the four talented authors who penned Whispers in Wyoming, a new western series in which Butch, the horse, plays an interesting role.

                                                                                                                          Today we’re here with the original old man Brown Butcher, the standing stud Quarter Horse of the Broken J Dude Ranch. Butch how do you like your new home? I know you’ve moved around a good bit in recent years.

            “The Broken J has greener pastures and  more wide open spaces, than where I’ve been recently. It’s a fine home for any horse, with lots of history from it.”

            How does it feel to be back with the family? I believe Chase Haven has been missing you while he was away riding the rodeo.

            “It sure is nice to see Chase again, he’s always been good to horses like me, I missed him when he was gone, but now we’re back together and things are looking pretty good. A beautiful ranch."

            I suppose being here on the ranch things are a little more lively than they were in your former home.

            “I like watching all the activity here at the Broken J, it reminds me of my younger days. I used to really cut up the circuit as cutting horse. I’m not young enough to join the rides anymore but I see plenty; adventures for young and old, not to mention so many budding romances.”

            I’ve seen a few newspaper clippings of you working, but that was a few years ago, what are your hopes and dreams now?

            “I hope Chase and Phil will raise up my colts and fillies to be outstanding cow horses, maybe help Kade keep the herd here inline.”

            It seems like you’re happy to live out the last of your days here on this beautiful ranch.

            “I am enjoying the peace of my new home. I have a big green pasture, a warm barn and a new legacy to add to the history of this old ranch.”

            Well there you have it folks, straight from the horse’s mouth.  And remember there’s always room at the Broken J for one more, so come on by.

The Ringmaster’s Wife

The dramatic era of the early1900's serves as backdrop to this story, which details the lives of two women whose choices cause their paths to meet in the mysterious world of the traveling circus. They both experience ambition and romance and great hope for the future. I love how Cambron features historical figures, including the Ringling Brothers, and surrounds them with fictitious characters full of heart and loaded with authenticity. She has achieved a satisfying level of sophistication in the plot, fashioning a fiction full of emotion and struggle, hard work and desire. This makes for an exciting read, but also paints a stunning tableau of richly painted scenes filled with mystery, old-world glamor, danger, sequins, and sawdust. 

I highly recommend this book for fans of historical fiction, vintage fiction, and anyone who’s had a dream and run after it.

Author Interview with Grace Marshall

When I was a teen, one of my favorites was a YA Horse-lover series, so I'm excited to introduce you to Grace Marshall, who also writes YA books with a horse theme.

Grace is the author of the “Horse Haven” series as well as Person of Faith; she has also contributed several articles to newspapers. She enjoys hanging out with her dashing husband, J. Lindsey Marshall, their saucy cat, Amerigo Vespucci, and their playful Mastiff puppy, Mini. Grace loves all animals but especially horses. She has lived in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Tennessee, and currently resides in the Missouri hills. What made you decide to become a writer?

I wanted to make a difference in the world and I thought that I could show truths through writing. Through writing you can inspire people and change their minds, you can attack the roots of the problem and help those in need. Plus, it’s incredibly fun!

Where did the inspiration for your latest book come from? 

My own life. I grew up in Wisconsin and moved further south while I was in High School. I currently live in Missouri. I never lived on a ranch but did have horses for a few years, and have volunteered at horse ranches. I drew from those experiences and No Pizza Delivery? was born!

Why do you write the genre you do?

I honestly didn’t decide on the young adult genre, it just sort of happened. I desire to help people in my writing and I found that my books are targeted toward young adults. I’ve had a heart for teen ministry for a while and I feel that it’s such an important decision-making time in people’s lives, so I guess it just made sense.

How does your faith and spirituality work in with your writing? 

It’s hard to not have it work in with my writing since my faith is a part of me and my life. I want Christian teenagers to be able to read this and have an example of a girl who follows a Christian lifestyle. I don’t like how a lot of young adult book options have erotica or dark creatures in them, so I don’t include those in mine. The main family in my book also goes to church so I add some scripture in during those scenes.

Sounds great, Grace. I can relate to that. What are you working on next? 

I’m currently working on the second book of the “Horse Haven” series, that book is titled Unexpected Allies and Recurring Warts. It includes a spunky kitten on a daring rescue, a neglected mare full of love, and boys that recur like warts, which make Ruth’s life far from boring. It is scheduled to release this September.

Book Review - Irish Meadows

The elegant society of early twentieth century Long Island, New York, is beautifully depicted in Irish Meadows, Susan Anne Mason’s debut historical novel. The setting reminded me of an American Downton Abbey. Oh, and it has horses—lots of horses. Ever since I read Black Beauty, I’ve loved horse stories.

The horse farm, Irish Meadows, is the pride of James O’Leary, the tyrannical patriarch, and is in danger of bankruptcy. The two older daughters, Brianna and Colleen, and former stable hand, Gilbert Whelan, become pawns in James’s plot to save the farm by choosing their mates.

Irish Meadows is two love stories in one book. Brianna and Gilbert are already secretly in love, but their keen sense of duty keeps them apart. Colleen escapes her father’s choice of suitor by trickery and falls in love with visiting seminary student, Rylan Montgomery, who plans on becoming a priest.

Skillful writing, well-developed characters, and riveting family intrigue make this turn-of-the-century historical a memorial reading experience.

I was privileged to receive an advance reader copy of Irish Meadows from Bethany House. Since I knew Susan Mason from the Seekerville blog, I jumped at the chance to read this book. Though she’s new to publishing, Sue’s a seasoned writer. Irish Meadows, Book 1 in the Courage to Dream series, is available for pre-order now with a July release. I recommend it for anyone who enjoys a love story where faith and courage triumph against difficult odds.
