On Eagle’s Wings—A Music Meditation

Christian writers are often asked, “What is your favorite Bible verse?”

Before becoming published, I hadn’t given it much thought, but when pressed for an answer, I realized the one verse, besides John 3:16, that had stuck in my memory over the years was Isaiah 40:31:

But those who wait upon the Lord will renew their strength.

They will mount up with wings like eagles.

They will run, and not be weary.

They will walk, and not faint. (Isaiah 40:31)

The impact of this verse, which I claimed as my favorite verse, was brought home to me a number of years ago after I discovered a song, written by Roman Catholic priest Michael Joncas. I went to Mass with a friend and the congregation sang one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. The song was entitled “On Eagle’s Wings.”

The scriptures the composer based his song on came from Isaiah 40:31 (quoted above), Psalm 91:4 (He will cover you with his feathers. Under his wings you will take refuge. His faithfulness is your shield and rampart), and Deuteronomy 32:11 (As an eagle that stirs up her nest, that flutters over her young, he spread abroad his wings, he took them, he bore them on his feathers).

Joncas wrote the melody after the mother of a friend died. The song, which was recorded in 1979, quickly became a favorite hymn in Catholic churches, especially for funerals.

For me, however, this beautiful song, which speaks about God raising us up and holding us in His hand, is a comfort for my life here on earth and the struggles I may face.  Knowing that the Lord is always there for me and has promised to be my Rock, my Protector, my Refuge, and will always be faithful to me in life and in death provides a measure of security I could never achieve on my own. When one has a God who can lift you up and help you soar, what else do you need?

I’d like to share this wonderful music with you, so please click on the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvpjxfWrjzY and listen to “On Eagle’s Wings.”

I pray this music blesses you today.

  1. Music often carries an encouraging message inspired from a scipture. One of my favorite is Proverbs 46:1 that has been set to music. Thank you for sharing this inspirational thought to start the week.

    1. The whole book of Psalms are songs. I often wish we knew the tunes David put to those words, although today's melodies are great, too. Thanks for dropping by.
