I Judged This Book by Its Cover

Book Review: Tide and Tempest by Elizabeth Ludwig

Blogger: Amber Schamel
I have to be honest. I decided to read this book the moment I saw its cover. Isn't it gorgeous? You can almost smell the salty sea and feel the breeze in your hair.. The book behind the cover did not disappoint me.

This is the first book that I've read by Elizabeth Ludwig, but it won't be the last. Tide and Tempest is book 3 in the Edge of Freedom series, but that didn't make it difficult to understand, and I didn't feel like I was missing links because I hadn't read the other books in the series.

Tide and Tempest is a very sweet story with masterful storytelling and suspense. Each of the characters will win you over and have you cheering for them all the way. I loved Tillie, and her personality was easy to relate to. She made a great 'damsel in distress' type of heroine, without being cliche. Morgan was a great character as well. One of my favorites to date, actually. This book is going on my To Be Read Again pile.

The mystery and suspense kept me guessing until the end.

There were a couple of "fast forward" parts, (what my family calls the kissing scenes) but other than that it was a great story.I highly recommend it for anyone who loves a good, clean historical with a suspense element.

Have you ever decided to read a book based on its cover? What usually causes you to buy/read a book?

  1. I judge books by their covers all the time. My daughter chastises me for it, but look how amazing this cover is. I want to read.

    1. I think one can't help but judge books by the covers. The covers are designed to communicate the mood and gist of the story, so it kinda makes sense.
This book is just as good as its cover!

  2. Covers often draw me to a book, but it's what's on the first page that makes me buy it. :-) Good post.

    1. I agree, Patricia, the first page is very important. Thanks for stopping by!

  3. The cover prompts me to read the back cover or flip through the pages, or not. I read one book as a Carol judge that I definitely would not have picked up on my own, but it turned out to be a GOOD book.

  4. Oh, yes, I have indeed purchased a book based only on the cover. I have also not purchased a book because of a cover. I guess if there had been enough other factors to tip the scale to do so, I would have. But with so many books and so little time to read, there has to be something to made me say yes or no.

Being a visual person, I very much believe in the power of a cover. I don't hold back in making that known to others. I truly believe you can hinder your sales by not picking the right cover. Though it is true you cannot judge a book by it's cover, one needs to face the reality of the impact it can have.

I have to agree with you. This cover is making me want to purchase it. If I had to grade it, it would be an A+. A 10!

    1. I'm with you, Kym. There have been some books that I did not buy because of the cover. Usually it has to do with the cover looking too gothic or sensual for my taste.

      Thanks for sharing!
