A Time to Pray

There is an occasion for everything,
and a time for every activity under heaven:
a time to give birth and a time to die;
a time to plant and a time to uproot;
a time to kill and a time to heal;
a time to tear down and a time to build;
a time to weep and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn and a time to dance;
a time to throw stones and a time to gather stones;
a time to embrace and a time to avoid embracing;
a time to search and a time to count as lost;
a time to keep and a time to throw away;
a time to tear and a time to sew;
a time to be silent and a time to speak;
a time to love and a time to hate;
a time for war and a time for peace.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 (HCSB)

My heart has been heavy lately with how things are progressing in the United States, as well as in the world as a whole. The more that sinful ways are glorified and justified, the more discord breaks out. We find that our Christian faith and belief system is being challenged on many levels.

For today, why don't you take time put of your day to get on your knees and pray for our Nation, our world, and for God's light to be shone to those around us. Ask Him how you can be that light.

What action step can you do today to show God's love to a dying world?

Devotion: Be Strong in the Lord!

Finally, my brothers,
Be strong in the Lord
and in his might.
Ephesians 6:10

Sometimes we're too stubborn or blind to see what's right in front of our eyes.
But recently I've reached out to God for help,
that I might strengthen my faith.

I'm grown mentally and spiritually, I think,
throughout this summer,
and hopefully, learned a few things along with
sharing love and compassion to others.

I learned to trust,
and because of that,
I was able to trust my hubby
in helping me conquer a major fear of mine:
Swimming!
I'm still far from a professional,
but I overcame something
that I'd carried forever.
Fear of swimming.
I learned to swim!

I practiced forgiveness.
Hurt really badly this past year by someone I thought
should appreciate all I'd done for them,
I carried that hurt inside me,
feeling justified in doing so.
In so doing, I hurt myself
because to be happy,
to have peace,
a person has to forgive.
Forgiving was a process God showed me
and helped me achieve.

I'm praying a hard prayer.
I was sitting in church one day
and felt like God directed my thoughts
to the ways I was praying.
Sure, it was easy to pray for those
who I loved dearly.
It was easy to pray for the softer hearts.
But what about that one I thought would never
serve God? Who, I thought, was a "hard" person?
Why didn't I pray for him/her?

My eyes were opened.
God is the God of possibilities,
and what I deemed as impossible
was nothing to God!

And, so, I allowed my prayers to include the impossible:
I began praying for that one.

Have I seen results?
Not yet.
But I'm not giving up either.
I will cast my faith on the waters of prayer,
and allow God to work.

I learned that the results are not my responsibility.
I'm required to do what I can.
God will produce the results.

God’s Plan To Get You Through Tough Times

Have you ever watched the Tour de France? Bicyclists power through the mountains in Europe, often topping speeds of 70 mph on their descent. This can make for horrific crashes when a cyclist misjudges a curve, slick road, or the distance between him and the cyclist next to him.
The race takes more than three weeks to complete, with 2,200 miles of rough terrain of the Pyrenees and the Alps intermixed with beautiful rolling countryside. Time trials are also part of the tour. Those riders who endure the entire race cross the finish line on the historical Champs-Élysées in Paris.
Power and speed are two integral components of the race, but the most important factor is pacing—much like marathon running. This is particularly true in time trials, where riders get to demonstrate their individual strength.
While full-speed crashes are less likely because time trials are very calculated and controlled, many factors can derail a racer’s success. Early fatigue from pressing too hard, lack of good preparation, yielding to outside or internal influences, and not enough training are just a few.
We can look at our spiritual lives and see similarities. We often zip through life with an overloaded calendar filled with more commitments than we can hope to accomplish well, and we pray that there isn’t a curve or slick road ahead.
Then a trial hits. Trials are mind-bogglingly slow and require the power that comes from the Holy Spirit to get through them. Getting alone with God through Bible study, peaceful prayer, and waiting is imperative for a successful outcome. Waiting isn’t something most of us are naturally geared toward.
In the Old Testament, Jeremiah finds himself in a desperate situation of trying to warn Judah of their impending doom while also trying to encourage them to renew their covenant with God. Jeremiah complained, felt depressed, and often showed downright despair. After one such complaint, in Jeremiah 12:5, God responded with “If you have raced with men on foot and they have worn you out, how can you compete with horses? If you stumble in safe country, how will you manage in the thickets by the Jordan?”
Basically, God said the trial is for your own good—to strengthen you for the tasks ahead. But he doesn’t just leave you there.
Don’t lose heart during a trial. There’s a promise of the finish line. The trial doesn’t last forever.
First Peter 1:6-7 reminds us that trials are “for a little while” and that we should rejoice in this. Trials have come to prove “genuineness of your faith”—of greater worth than gold.
We’re told how to run. Hebrews 12:1-2 reminds us to “run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfector of faith.”
And lastly, be encouraged by the outcome. James 1:2-12 gives us great encouragement that “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.”
We can persevere with God’s sufficient grace (2 Corinthians 12:9) and through the power of the Holy Spirit. Then we are refined to walk out our faith to help others going through similar trials, and in the end, receive the crown of life the Lord promised to those who love Him.
The Apostle Paul in 2 Timothy 4:7-8 said, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.”
So feel confident that when the trial comes—you’ve trained for it, and the Master Coach will walk beside you, ensuring you don’t fatigue until you reach the end.
Isn’t that a great promise to hold on to?
What are your go-to Bible verses in times of trouble? Is there a time you can look back on and know beyond a shadow of a doubt that God carried you through?

When financier Penny Ruskin returns to Walhalla, South Carolina, she has one purpose—to settle her grandmother’s estate and sell the Victorian house she grew up in. Not an easy task with the downturned economy. What she doesn't count on are all the roadblocks thrown in her path.
Walhalla is Tommy McAllister’s life. Between his family’s feed-and-seed store and the bank he’s vice president of, he’s stretched thin trying to survive the recession. But when a girl he hasn’t seen since high school breezes back into town, he’s ready to push himself even further to help her feel at home—and convince her to stay. He reaches out to Penny, but the last thing she wants is to be trapped in a small town that holds painful memories—one dark secret in particular.
The town matchmaker and bank manager, Miss Betty, a motherless teen Emma who lives down the lane from Penny, and the church ladies of Walhalla’s First Baptist add both heartwarming and challenging moments to Penny’s life.
With the past dogging Penny’s steps, dredging up painful memories she’s tried to outrun, relatives threaten the future she has begun to hope for…But somewhere deep inside her, a spark of hope remains. Tommy isn’t the only one praying for a miracle.

Great is Our God!

How Great is Our God!

And the peace of God which passes all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7

It seems everywhere you turn today, the world is a mess. I try to keep up with current events, but sometimes I find myself pulling back away from it all. The enemy of us all would drown us in disbelief, doubt and worry if we would allow it. I find my spirit beginning to flounder in that sea of distress and must need revive it with the good things of God.

In my newest WWII Spies series, in book two, soon to be released, both Jerry and Josie Patterson are rebellious, self-centered people. Neither have given much thought to God, and both have gone gung-ho after their own pleasures and desires.

  • Jerry not only suffers a serious physical injury, but his spirit is troubled over actions taken as a spy in Germany. Guilt over the death of a sweet woman, guilt over all the deceit he needed to use, guilt over the temptations that knocked, and though he didn't give in to them, nevertheless, troubles his mind and soul. Who do you turn to when you have no God in your life?
  • Josie, filled with elaborate plans on becoming an Olympic participant once the horror of war is over, ignores all the people in her life—except when it's convenient for her to use them. All that matters is attaining her goal and Jerry. Running roughshod over all others, forgiving and forbearing as they are, is her usual ploy in getting what she wants. So who do you turn to when all your dreams turn to ashes?

It's only after each one of them receive a severe injury that prevent them from doing what they want, only when they think they've lost the other, that they begin to listen to what God is teaching them.

Isn't that so in our own lives? Many times we go headstrong toward our goals, without prayer or definite assurance from God that it's what he wants for us. It seems a good thing, beneficial, and desirable so it must be good for us, right?

God is so great, so faithful, so loving in pulling us back, in teaching us that He is our all in all. Our strength in times of deep distress and trial, our anchor when the storms of life are blowing us off course, our shield when others would hurt or wound our spirits...our peace through it all.

May we, like Josie and Jerry, learn that our God IS a great God. We need have no fear; he does not fail.

Author interview with Edie Melson

Find your voice, live your story…is the foundation of Edie Melson’s message, no matter if she’s addressing parents, military families, readers of fiction, or writersAs an author, blogger, and speaker she’s encouraged and challenged audiences across the country and around the world. Her passion to help those who are struggling find the strength they need to triumph is reflected in the characters she creates and the insight she shares.
Connect with Edie further on her website, through FacebookTwitter, and Instagram.

Alone: After her family is killed in the cleansing, Bethany’s purpose in life has changed. No longer will she be allowed to work to save her dying planet. As a slave, endurance is her goal as she marks each day as one moment closer to an eternity spent reunited with those she loved. But when her planet is invaded, everything changes. Now she must decide either to align herself with those from her planet who condemned her faith and killed her family, or with the warriors who have conquered her world. Ultimately her choice will mean life or death for more than just her planet’s ecosystem. She alone holds the key to a powerful secret, and the fate of the entire galaxy depends on her decision.

Heidi here. Edie, congratulations on your recent novel, Alone. You’ve published a number of non-fiction prayer books (While My Soldier Serves and While My Child is Away), how was it to write fiction?

It was such fun! I love nonfiction, but I think spending this time developing my fiction muscles has made me a stronger writer in so many ways. It gave me a break so I can come back fresh, and a new love so I always have something fun to write.

Awesome perspective. What was your inspiration behind writing Alone?

Believe it or not, it was a dream. This was a book that I’ve wanted to write since the early 90s. I knew that I didn’t have the skill to do this story justice so I took time to learn how to write before I attempted it.

Wow. My first novel was also a dream ~ I've often thought it was God's way of getting my attention at that time in my life. So tell us, who/what spurs you to write?

For me writing is a lifeline. I process life by writing things out. If I didn’t write, I think I’d go crazy. My mother will tell you that I’ve been writing since I could crawl to a white wall with a crayon in my hand.

Oh, the number of walls your mother must have painted over 😀  How do your faith and spiritual life play into the picture and affect your storytelling?

No matter what I write, my world view colors how I look . I don’t think of myself as a Christian writer, I’m a writer who’s a Christian.

Very good point. Edie, I love plotting and am always looking for tips. How do you plot a novel? How close to the final version does the first draft read?

I spend time thinking things through before I begin writing my first storyline. It’s a synopsis-type document where I list the major plot points and ideas. Then I do a scene map. I write a short description of each scene. I include which character’s point of view I’m in. I use this to guide my first draft. It’s not set in stone, but it keeps me from going too far afield.

Good information, thanks for sharing! Now, for fun, if you could take a plane to ONE place, where would you go? If you could bring one person with you, who would it be? And if you could eat only one kind of food during your trip, what would that be?

I would board a space plane and visit Mars. I’d take my engineering husband so he could explain the science of what I’m experiencing. I’d eat all kinds of freeze dried astronaut food.

Spoken from a speculative fiction author! Usually I get warm vacation locales.....Moving on, tell us about future books planned.

I don’t have anything contracted right now, but I’m working on a sequel to Alone. This one is called Adrift and is Manaen’s story. I’m also working on a series of Steampunk Fables. Each is a retelling of a classic story. The first is Maiden of Iron, a retelling of Robin Hood from Maid Marion’s perspective.

That sounds super exciting! Edie, thank you for your time today, it was fun! And congratulations again on you novel, Alone, as well as your prayer books (While My Soldier Serves and While My Child is Away).

Let's keep the conversation rolling. Does anyone have a question for Edie? By the way, she is giving away a signed copy of Alone to one of  you (US only) ~ so comment away and don't forget to leave your email address too 😎

Waterfalls and Waves

“My soul is downcast within me…Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls;
all your waves and breakers have swept over me.” Psalm 42:6-7

I lay in bed and cried. My husband had no idea what to say, and I couldn’t explain what was going on. My heart and mind struggled with accepting that God’s answer to my cherished prayer was, “No.”

I could remain sad and angry, or accept God’s will and move on, trusting Him.

He is God, by the very virtue of His name, the Creator and Ruler of the universe, the Name at the sound of which “every knee shall bow and every tongue confess.” Only He knows why some things must be and why some things will never be. The reasons may have to wait for heaven—a lifetime of not understanding—of accepting and moving forward.

Verse seven reveals the all-powerful, sovereign God, the One who is above all other powers, the Name above all names, the One who controls the immense and raging might of a waterfall.

Many years ago, we stood, at a look-out point atop the Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River. It was awesome, beautiful and terrifying at the same time. We held tight to the hands of our children unless fascinated, they should lean over the railing too far and be swept away.

Victorious living requires me to reach that point where I submit myself wholly to the will of God. I must accept what He has allowed, even if His reasons are not revealed until eternity.

Notice when the writer says the waves and breakers swept over him, Who controls and owns them. The Master of the mighty waves that threaten to sweep me away and fill me with fear and dread, is none other than the sovereign God who inspires awe by His mastery of the waterfall’s power.

When waves threaten to overcome… When dreams, hopes, and plans seem swept away, leaving no hope… Look to God, who controls all things. Remember His everlasting love. Do not fear the events which swirl outside human ability to check and contain. God is in control.
