Love is a Powerful Emotion: A Devotion

God is love,
and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God,
and God in him.
I John 4:16b

I'm always looking for ways to show my love to my family and friends.
It not only gives them happiness and joy (I hope),
but it also gives me satisfaction and peace
to know I've again shown I love them.

So...
recently I saw this picture:

and decided immediately to do this for my youngest grandson's
class for Valentine's Day.

I wanted to make sure it would be okay with him (Jonathan).
I sent him the picture and asked if he'd like me to make these for his class.

He faced timed with me and emphatically declared,
YES!
I said, but what if some didn't like applesauce?
No, he assured me, everyone in his class liked applesauce.

Now, whether he really knows or not,
his enthusiasm gave me the answer.

This week I'm gathering the materials for this simple project
and plan on delivering the Valentine Applesauce cuties
to him when its time.

How I love that boy!

But even more so,
how God loves me.
A fumbling, mistake-making,
sometimes selfish, sometimes hesitant
sometimes asking forgiveness
person I am,
and...
God loves me.

And that's
 enough.

Kind Words Do Wonders: A Devotion

And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.
Ephesians 4:32

Oh, my, what's better than a kind word spoken or a gentle act of love to cheer the heart?

I was in the checkout line at Wal-mart the other day, and when I got ready to leave, I looked at the clerk and said, "You have a nice day."

She glanced at me, a bit of surprise on her face. Her lips widened in a smile and she said something like this: "Thank you. You are always so nice."

I'm not totally sure how it affected her, if she cared, or even if she needed the words of kindness. But, oh, they affected me. My own words. And her answer. From a drab day to a day that's like:

a fire sparkler sky,

An anchor is a storm-driven sea,

A ride on an old bicycle on a summer day,

Sunshine on a forest path after a week of rain,

Mustard seeds at the local grocery, reminding us to have faith.

Faith in ourselves, our kind words, our fellowman, our God.

We sure won't go wrong with those!

Happy day!

A Willow Valley Rivalry

This new Historical Romance series is set in the 1800s. Each story has a mystery to solve and each book is family-friendly. I have released a new book in this series, which takes place in 1839 in the United States. This was a time of turmoil for many, especially for those who supported the abolitionist movement.

In A Pleasant Rivalry, Angelica Davis is surprised when she finds out that an old school chum has returned to Willow Valley to take over his grandfather’s business. Since she writes articles for the Chronicle and Simon Morgan owns the Willow Valley News, they just happen to be rivals. The competition is on. Who will be the first to discover the identity of the jewel thief or the arsonist? Will it be Angelica or Simon? Gradually the feelings she once had for him return as they both search for the same stories. To her surprise, Angelica realizes she is losing her heart to her rival.

I loved this book!  It was a great historical read and full of surprises.  I totally didn't expect what happened… to happen.  The time period was an interesting one and I love how the author intertwines historical events into the story.  It was a new and refreshing tale.” –Sunnie Reviews

You will learn about the Trail of Tears, the abolitionist movement that began in Illinois, the refugees that were kicked out of Missouri, and you will fall in love all over again as you see two classmates bond in a pleasant rivalry.

It has been thirteen years since Angelica saw her classmate. He left at the age of seventeen to join the Navy. Now he’s back to run his grandfather’s newspaper business. With Simon running the Willow Valley News and Angelica writing articles for the Chronicle, the competition is on. Who will get the story first? Angelica or her rival?

Watching the rivalry between these two will have you on the edge of your seat, waiting to see what happens next. I would give this book a higher rating than a five-star review if I could. Linda Weaver Clarke is an amazing author.” – Debbie Jamieson, Reviewer

Since this is book three in the series, you will meet a few of those from previous stories. You will see Nicholas and Felicity from book one and Emmeline and Lucas from book two. They were beloved characters that snuck back into this story and are even more enchanting. They add a bit of spice to this story.

The first book in the Willow Valley series is One Last Dance. Felicity Brooks is an artist but her career is cut short when her father passes away. When Felicity meets their new neighbor, a fine-looking bachelor, she soon discovers that he is hiding his true identity. Nicholas Adams is on a quest. But that is not all. When she finds out that someone is after a valuable heirloom…a precious treasure that her father had discovered in his attic, her life takes a new turn.

One Last Dance is a historical romance with a mystery to add to the tale. Felicity has always been a strong and independent woman. Amongst mystery, loss, paintings, and a career, she is going to have to decide if love has a place in her heart.” --Author Anna Del C Dye

The second book in the Willow Valley series is Angel’s Serenade. Emmeline Scott is raising her sister’s two children and is surprised when she finds out the new doctor in town is helping her nephew adapt to his surroundings. It is not easy to be uprooted and have to start a new life. As Emmeline gets to know the charming doctor, Lucas Golden, they become intrigued by her neighbor’s mysterious behavior. Will they discover his secret? And who is the leader of the River Pirates, who is causing so much havoc?

Clarke has created a sweet romance that will warm the heart, and it’s wrapped up in fascinating yesteryear details of courting, medical practice and river pirates. I highly recommend the book to those who enjoy sweet romance with a bit of mystery.” –Author Gail Pallotta

Devotion: O Holy Night

We went to a dinner theater musical Christmas play for several years where the ending included a young, talented, professional actor singing "O Holy Night." His strong, vibrant voice had a profound effect on me. From the night forward, "O Holy Night" became my favorite Christmas hymn.

Last night, hubby sang it, and although he's not a professional, he did a great job. More importantly, it touched my heart with the words and music.

Let us all remember as we celebrate Christmas, the words:

O holy night, the stars are brightly shining.
It is the night of the dear Savior's birth.
Long lay the world in sin and error pining,
Till he appeared and the soul felt its worth.
A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks, a new and glorious morn!

Rejoice! Celebrate!

Merry Christmas to one and all!

Devotion: Resting in Him

When All Else Fails:
God Doesn't!

When We Don't Understand
God Does!

When the path is dark before us,
God sends the light!

God is Good
All the Time!

Truly my soul finds rest in God.
Psalm 62:1

Blessings!

The Redemption of Caralynne Hayman

Caralynne Hayman is angry and bitter over the abuse and death of her eleven-year-old daughter from the hands of her religious group, The Children of Righteous Cain. When her husband suffers a sudden heart attack, she does nothing to help him. In her eyes, someone needs to pay, and if that means all of the men in the group, then so be it.
Dayne MacFarland is sent away to college by the senior elder of the group to learn ministry. When he returns after finding salvation, determined to bring the truth to the people he’s known all his life, he rediscovers Cara and realizes the love he once felt for her is still deeply embedded within his heart.

Dayne faces men unwilling to turn their backs on the cult training he despises. Cara faces men who follow their leader in abuse toward their wives and the young girls of the group. Cara is considered rebellious and inappropriate to befriend. Dayne is the apple of Elder Simmons’ eye—until he takes a stand against their teachings.

Can Dayne's love for Caralynne bridge the gulf of anger and bitterness that divides the community? Or will Caralynne's deadly secrets prove too high a price for her redemption?

Devotion: When Troubles Surround You

So do not fear, for I am with you
do not be dismayed, for I am your God,
I will strengthen you and help you,
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Isaiah 41:10

Do you ever feel overwhelmed by the problems in your life?
Do you ever get that sinking feeling that you'll not make it through
the troubles you're going through?
Have your friends forsaken you or turned their backs on you?
Are you disappointed at other people's reactions?

Don't fret!
God has our back.
Hold your head high.
Lift your hands in praise.
Sing!
Shout!
Rejoice!

Today, I was disappointed in friends actions when one person
asked them to share.
I wanted to correct them, rebuke them,
argue with them.

Sometimes we do get disappointed
or hurt or upset.

But I've purposed in my heart to:
not allow that disappointment in others to keep me down.

I will lift up my head and rejoice.
I will sing when the tears come.
I will shout a hallelujah to heaven!

Because...
I know God will strengthen me
He'll uphold my with his hand.
For he is my God!

Rejoice!

Devotion: I See Trees of Color...

There is a time for every season under the sun!
Autumn is my favorite season, hands down!

It makes me think of a favorite song of mine:
"What a Wonderful World"
sung by Louie Armstrong.

He sings about:
trees of green
red roses

Skies of blue
clouds of white
Bright days
dark nights

The colors of the rainbow
the faces of people
friends shaking hands

All leading to a wonderful world!

This autumn,
in spite of the troubles and worries in this world,
I want to see:

God's wonderful world.

* The amazing spider web caught in a ray of sunlight on a misty morning

* the colored leaves that keep on giving
with crunches and piles for children to play in

* the blue skies that give us hope,
the dark, cloudy skies that help our imagination
with shapes of creatures only we can see.

* the decorative porches and yards that warm my heart.

* the pumpkin feasts and fests, the flavors and scents

* the smells of autumn, musty leaves,
roasting wieners and globs of melted marshmallow,
the scents of apple and spice and pumpkin delights

And so much more!

For me, Autumn is a wonderful season
that helps me to remember:
What a Wonderful World!

The Imperfectionist's Guide to Sorting Your Stuff by Lisa Lawmaster Hess

I'm excited to have Lisa visit again! We've been author friends for a long time, and it's a real privilege to enjoy reading this interview from her. Join in on the fun!

Thanks so much for joining me on Sunnybank Secrets, Lisa.

About Lisa:
Lisa Lawmaster Hess is a Jersey girl who moved to Pennsylvania for college, then stayed.

The author of three nonfiction books

  • Acting Assertively, Diverse Divorce and Know Thyself
and two novels

  • Casting the First Stone and Chasing a Second Chance
Lisa has also written for online and print publications. Lisa blogs at The Porch Swing Chronicles and Organizing By STYLE and is a frequent contributor to CatholicMom.com, Teachers of Vision and Today’s Catholic Teacher. A retired elementary school counselor, Lisa is an adjunct professor of psychology at York College of Pennsylvania. Her latest book is Know Thyself: The Imperfectionist’s Guide to Sorting Your Stuff.

NOW, on to the interview:

Is there a story behind your books?/What started you on your writing journey?

Know Thyself is my fifth book, but I’ve been working on novels, so it’s been over a decade between non-fiction books! This one (which took every bit of that decade to get from idea to completion) arose out of my own desire to get sustainably organized in a way that worked for me. An unexpected move that I didn’t initially want to make was the catalyst for working on my own organizational skills, and the ensuing research and journey led me to the conclusion that organization is not a one-size-fits-all proposition.

What kind of books do you enjoy reading? (Book recommendations very welcome!)

I enjoy a good novel but, lately, I’ve been reading a lot of non-fiction. Last summer, I downloaded Audible and I’ve found that I love listening to audiobooks even though my commute is short. My recent favorites include Becoming by Michelle Obama, Still Foolin’ ’Em by Billy Crystal and Jodi Piccoult’s Small Great Things. I’m currently reading Biased by Dr. Jennifer Eberhardt and listening to Gretchen Rubin’s Better Than Before. I’m also reading an advance copy of Clarice G. James’s The Girl He Knew. Think I can finish them all before the semester starts at the end of August??

Which character in your newest release most interested you while you wrote? Why?

Since Know Thyself is non-fiction, I’m going to take the liberty of changing the question a bit, and share the styles that best describe me. In Know Thyself, I share three personal styles (I need to see it, I love to be busy and I love stuff) and three organizational styles (cram and jam, drop and run and I know I put it somewhere) that influence our organizational success. I most identify with the I need to see it personal style and the drop and run organizational style, so I plan my organizational systems around those styles.

Why do you write in the genre you do?

I write both fiction and non-fiction. For fiction, the draw for me is the characters. I’m a total pantser, but I have to sketch out my characters and their backstories before I sit down to write. Once I know who the people are, I introduce them to each other and take it from there.

With non-fiction, I like that I can write about topics I find interesting and relevant. Know Thyself is my first non-fiction book with a spiritual aspect to it, written primarily for adults. Acting Assertively and Diverse Divorce were both written for the educational market and while the concepts transferred to adults, they were written for adults to use with children.

How much research do you do for each book?

Because I write contemporary fiction and my non-fiction is within my wheelhouse as a psychology instructor, I don’t usually do a lot of research. If I come up against a topic that’s important to the story that I want to know more about, that’s when I dig in. My goal is not to become an expert but, rather, to write accurately and knowledgeably about the topic.

Share a verse or Scripture passage with us that is special to you. (and why it's special)

Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” This verse hangs in a place of prominence in my office – in fact, I purchased a ceramic cross with this verse on it so I could see it daily. Seven years ago, I took advantage of an early retirement incentive and retired from my career as a school counselor. My daughter had just finished middle school and college loomed in four years. I knew the early retirement was the right choice – most days, anyway – but leaving behind a job with a great salary and benefits was a scary proposition. I read this verse a lot that first year until my next steps became clear and, to this day, it sustains me when things are hard.

About the book:
Know Thyself: The Imperfectionist’s Guide to Sorting Your Stuff, is meant for anyone who has ever struggled to get organized. So often, people who’ve struggled with this life skill have also lost faith in themselves, which is more demoralizing than any amount of clutter. Know Thyself takes a light-hearted approach to a serious topic, with the aim of building confidence alongside organizational skills by building on what we do naturally. This strengths-based approach helps readers to organize in a sustainable way, rather than merely clearing the clutter and hoping for the best.
