Need a change from historical romance or contemporary fiction? In this
inspiring autobiography, Romanian pastor Richard Wurmbrand shares how he
and other Romanian Christians met secretly to worship while Russian
Communist ruled their country. As a result of his devotion, Wurmbrand was
tortured and imprisoned for fourteen years. After his release, he and his
wife went on to establish the Voice of the Martyrs (VOM) organization,
which now supports pastors and believers in underground churches in dozens
of oppressive countries from Algeria to Yemen.
I love the hopeful, inspiring anecdotes in this book. For instance, on one
occasion, armed Russian soldiers burst into a church one Sunday morning
during services. They demanded that everyone willing to denounce their
faith leave at once. Lukewarm members of the congregation fled. The
remaining steadfast believers trembled in fear, knowing they would surely
be killed or taken to prison. Instead, the soldiers put down their weapons
and with tears in their eyes, confessed that they too were believers in
Christ Jesus and wanted to worship with sincere believers who would not
turn them over to the authorities.
This is a timeless and bestselling book about courage, faith and
forgiveness. The book was first published in 1967 following Wurmbrand’s
testimony before the U.S. Senate. This new 50th anniversary edition has
been published to coincide with the motion picture that is coming to
theaters in March. Here’s a link to the movie trailer:

VOM is currently running a special on the book—50 copies for $50. Visit

ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing. I've read other books that VOM has published, but not this one yet.
We've just watched the movie based on this book on Tuesday. It's coming out in March but we've got preview link. It's heartbreaking, tragic, and at the same time full of forgiveness and God's grace. Get the box of tissues if you are planning to watch it or read...
