The year is 1777 and the war has already broken the heart of Mary Thomsen, a nineteen-year-old colonial woman from Massachusetts. Her brother Asa is dead—killed by the King's Army, so when she stumbles across a wounded British soldier, her sense of right and wrong is challenged. Should she help a soldier of the enemy who took her brother's life, or let him die, cold and alone?
The war has also broken British soldier Daniel Lowe's spirit. A severely wounded prisoner of war, he escaped his Rebel captors while on a death march to Boston. As the pain in his injured leg worsens, he wonders if the young woman looking down at him is an angel or the enemy.
Need and compassion bring these two young lives together, but will the bitterness of war keep them apart? Or can they find their way to love and forgiveness on the Road to Deer Run?
Angela Couch here, and to me the word that best seems to fit Road to Deer Run is authentic. It was a treat to step back in time and be immersed in the details that brought this story to life. Everything from their speech to how they nursed their wounds. I also love the tension. How could there not be ample with enemies falling in love...oops, that might be a bit of a spoiler. ;)
One of my favorite things about Road to Deer Run, is that it is inspired by the author's own ancestors. It was fun reading the historical note at the end of the book and seeing how the author wove her foreparents' love story and life into this tale of danger and romance.
With life and death a daily battle, a war raging around them and even in the hearts of their neighbors, Daniel and Mary's story is a worthwhile read. Especially if you enjoy Colonial American history!

DeleteThe Road to Deer Run sounds very intriguing. Congratulations on its release! Family history is a passion of mine as well!
ReplyDeleteHi Norma Gail! So nice to see you here! Family history is amazing and can be a great source for bringing fiction alive. When I was a little girl—and embarrassed by the fact one of my ancestors was a British Redcoat—I never could have imagined that one day I would write a story about these grandparents from the American Revolution. It was quite the ancestral adventure! Thanks for commenting!
DeleteGreat blog about this excellent book. It has become one of my favorites. I cannot wait until the next book is out on June.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on looking forward to book two. :)

ReplyDeleteI love historical fiction but I don't recall reading a lot about the American Revolution. Elaine, I especially like that you have used family experiences. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteGuess it's time to get more into that era. ;) I very much enjoy that time setting.
DeleteConnie, thanks for your comment! I agree that the American Revolution era is often less written about than the Civil War or other eras in our nation's history. But growing up in Massachusetts had me immersed in the time period, so I suppose it seemed a natural topic when I started writing historical fiction. I also feel it is important that we not forget the sacrifice that our country's founders went through to give us freedom. We have much to be grateful for.
DeleteLove the time period of the book.
ReplyDeleteKeep tuned in then as Elaine has a couple more books in this series and I also have a series that will release in this time period. So much to look forward to! :)
