Jelly rolls are strips of fabric, typically 2.5 x 44 inches, and found in a roll. The color schemes are eye catching and I've been looking for different things to make with them. Knowing this, my mother shared this video with me. Now, I know it is long, but if you like quilting it's well worth the watching.
Unfortunately, due to writing deadlines and a family issue, I haven't had time to make my own yet. It's the first thing I'm going to do once I turn my book in, after I read one book from my to-be-read pile. ;)
The possibilities are endless. Here is a picture of one bag my mom made.
It's a nice, large size and durable. My laptop, as well as my notebooks would fit nicely inside and there is a pocket on the outside for my index cards, pens and pencils. My youngest daughter would fill it with her dance shoes or yarn.
I love this little bag. My mom added a zipper to the top and created a box pleat. It's really cute and perfect for cosmetics, pens and pencils, medications and all those other things that typically find their way to the bottom of the bag.
The jelly roll bag I envision making will have earth tones and I'm thinking I'll iron on my book cover to the pocket portion.
Have you made anything with jelly rolls?

"To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: ... a time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak" (Ecclesiastes 3:1, 7).
Great idea, Christina. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, Jodie. You'll have to let me know if you make something out of jelly rolls.
DeleteThey're so colorful, but buying material in that fashion almost sounds like cheating. ;) Thanks for the tip, Christina. :)
ReplyDeleteCrystal, as complicated as my life is right now I'm all right with cheating. :)
ReplyDeleteThese are so cute and expensive if you buy them from the store. I'd like to make one for my granddaughter for her swimming gear. She's on the swim team. Would make a good beach bag too. Thanks for the idea.
ReplyDeleteElaine, I don't know if you have Hobby Lobby close by but you can print off a 40% off coupon and use it on jelly rolls. It cuts the cost down. I'm fortunate enough to own an upholstery shop with my husband so there is always left over dacron/batting. :) This would be great for a beach bag. If you end up making one please share pictures.
DeleteThanks for sharing, Christina. These bags are adorable! Need to add these to my to-be-made pile. :) Your mom did a beautiful job and I love your idea to add your book cover to a pocket. Great post!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Cindy. My mom always does a fabulous job. :) She's been sewing for over 50 years and she's a detail oriented person. Sometime I'll have to share clothes she makes for dolls.
DeleteChristina, I love these bags. They are just darling. Some people can do most anything, I am just not one of them. I wish I could make one as bags are my thing but I can't get my hands to cooperate when sewing or handwork comes in to play. Thank you for sharing.

Melanie, I totally understand. There are some things I just can't wrap my brain around. Sewing can be difficult for me.
DeleteI adore these bags! You ladies make me want to buy a sewing machine and learn how to use it!! I do hope to learn one of these days. :)

Britney, you should. I took a quilting class a few years ago and had so much fun. Of course, I've been sewing off an on for a few years. My sewing machine died and I keep thinking I need to get another one. We have industrial machines but I don't think they'd work for bags like these.
