The Face of the Lord by Shirley Raye Redmond

Do you recognize this image of Jesus? For decades this picture and others by the same artist hung in living rooms and Sunday School classrooms all across America.

The artist is Warner Sallman (1892-1968) of Chicago. The son of Finnish and Swedish immigrants, Sallman was a devout member of the Swedish Evangelical Covenant Church. So popular were his depictions of Christ that they appeared in Sunday School materials, gift items and even clocks and jigsaw puzzles.

During World War II, the Salvation Army and the YMCA handed out pocket size copies of “The Head of Christ” to soldiers being shipped off the Europe and Asia. Later, the illustration was circulated among churches of all denominations when a Lutheran organizer suggested that there should be “card-carrying Christians” to stand against the “card-carrying Communists.” It is estimated that more than 500 million copies of this picture have been circulated around the world.

Today, Sallman’s illustrations can still be found on display in Christian homes and businesses—even in faraway Africa and Asia. Do you have a copy of one of Sallman’s illustrations in your home—perhaps inside the front page of a Bible or hanging on a bedroom wall?

  1. We had a copy in our home for years. We moved several times, and I think it was sold in a rummage sale.

  2. I remember these from years gone by in homes and churches. I'm always glad to see them still hanging in older churches and eve in stained glass windows on churches.

  3. I've seen those pics many times and never thought about the person who painted them. Fascinating stuff. I love the fact that the WWII soldiers carried those cards! Interesting. Thanks, Shirley.

  5. We still have Jesus's head portrait hanging in our church and when we married my uncle and aunt gave my husband and me the picture of Jesus knocking at the door. Thanks for sharing about the gentleman responsible for these iconic pictures.
