The Never-ending Quilt

I have some unique and special quilts from my husband’s two grandmothers. They aren't particularly beautiful, but I love them. I used them to give my oldest son some privacy in his loft bedroom.

When my middle son was about ten, he started begging for a quilt for his loft room. Since my husband was fresh out of grandmothers, I scoured the quilt books, determined to make him a special quilt of his very own. A friend of mine heard about my project and gave me a single quilt block as inspiration. I settled on a pattern called Wagon Tracks.

My friend’s quilt block had been made in the thirties so I decided to use thirties-inspired fabric in primary colors. I dutifully made four or five blocks and then life shoved the project to a back closet. A few years (!) later, he mentioned it, and I promised him it would be finished for his high school graduation…er…college graduation...uh…marriage?

He’s twenty-five now, graduated from college, and married. <sigh>

I thought better of promising its completion before their first child’s birth. Now I’m hoping to finish before the youngest grandchild goes to kindergarten, but I’m not making any promises.

Do you have any unfinished crafts lurking a closet or drawer?

P.S. This poor quilt has been so neglected it took Bill and I three days to find it. I needed the pictures. Now it'll be tucked away again until I'm inspired (or pressured) to work on it. Don't judge. =op

  1. Lora, I admire you for attempting to make a quilt. Your intentions are wonderful! I think we all have projects that we push back or put off. I think it is all about the timing. One day when the time is right, everything will fall into place and that quilt will be completed.

    1. Thanks, Melanie. I keep telling myself that if I just sewed one block a day, the quilt top would be finished in no time. You're right...one day.

  2. Don't feel bad Lora. You are not alone. :) Our daughter is still waiting on one we promised her. I have plenty of unfinished projects (UFO's) in my closets and drawers. Isn't that a sign of a true quilter? Your quilt blocks are pretty and will make a beautiful quilt.

    1. Thanks, Cindy. Glad to know I'm not alone. I'd love to say this is my only unfinished project. Unfortunately, no.

  3. I have the back of a pink vest on knitting needles. Started it 18 years ago. Sigh. It's beautiful yarn...but I just don't wear vests any longer. lol Love this post!

    1. Take heart, Patricia. Vest are coming back in style, I hear. I'd love to be able to knit. I can crochet...sort of...but knitting is waaaaay out of my league.

  4. I actually have an impressive collection of quilt tops that need to be quilted. I finish the top, move on to another and never seem to quilt on down. I think I will have to start tying some, just to lessen the collection.

    1. I hear that's a common problem, Dora. My only real quilting experience is with doll quilts. (They're so small, I can take them with me, and I finish them quickly. :) )

I've never tried tying. Is that anything like tatting?
