Fun Fridays - A Quilter's Best Friend

I purchased a new foot for my Janome recently and I’m so glad I did. If you’re a quilter, and don’t have one of these, you’re missing out. This particular accessory is a Janome quarter inch seam foot with edge guard. Instead of “eyeballing” your quarter inch seam, this dandy helper does it for you. Just follow the guide with your fabric edge and the seam will come out right on the money at a quarter inch, the standard seam size in the quilting world. In the photo, you can see the black guard. The foot is silver in color, but my flash made it look a little gold.

For years, I aligned the fabric at the quarter inch mark on the metal panel underneath. This quarter inch foot is much simpler and easier to use. When your seams are precise, your piecing will be easier and more accurate too.

I purchased my foot from Amazon, but checked in my machine manual and online to be sure I had the right accessory number. If you already have a quarter inch seam foot, please excuse my enthusiasm, but if you don’t, make hast and buy yourself a quilter’s best friend. You’ll be glad you did. What’s your favorite machine foot?

  1. I don't have a sewing talent in any way, shape, or form but I have two friends that are quilters and I have heard them talk about their "foot" and how handy it is. I am in awe of people that have this talent. My hands and my brain just don't have a good working relationship!

    2. Sorry. Made a goof on the first reply so let's try this again.

Melanie, I bet you would be surprised how well you do with sewing. If you find a project that inspires you, I'm sure your quilting friends would be glad to help. :) Piecing some simple quilt blocks would be easy and lots of fun. Thanks for sharing and I'm glad you stopped by!

  2. Hi Cindy. I haven't done any machine quilting, only hand quilting. I do sew though. In fact, I just made a 19th century dress for a genre dinner.

    1. I love hand quilting too. :) I haven't done any machine quilting either but would like to try machine stippling. I think hand quilting will always be my favorite though. This quarter inch seam foot is nice for piecing the quilt top.

Oh wow, a 19th century dress would be beautiful! Lots of work too. Kudos to you for completing such a wonderful project. You'll have to do a blog post with pictures so we can see it. Thanks for stopping by!

  3. Cindy, I so admire people who can sew and quilt. It is something that I have never done. Perhaps one day I will give it a try!

    1. Britney, I hope you do give it a try some day! Remember, keep it simple and make it fun. And don't worry about how perfect it is. The best way to learn is to find a project you're excited about and jump in, mistakes and all. :) We all goof up when we're learning. I bet you'll do great! I like to browse through patterns online and window shop just for fun. Purses and pillows are small projects you can finish quickly. Thanks for stopping by!
