First Drop of Rain-Book Review

First Drop of Rain by Christy Truitt is a great story about fascinating characters. There’s even a romantic thread which is lots of fun. But in between the lines and running deep within the relationships depicted in the story, is a reality most people think will never happen to them: physical abuse by a loved one. Because this topic is woven tightly into the plot, the sum of its parts becomes something altogether more. Yes, it’s entertaining, and sobering, and even a bit educational. But for someone who needs to hear its message, I hope it will be inspirational.

The power of this story comes from its characters because these characters are us. They are realistic people living in a Southern town, making friends, serving their community, and dealing with their hippy-sister. They argue with their husbands. They help a friend who needs a hand. They volunteer, work long hours, and kick off their high-heels as soon as they get in the car. It’s a heart-full story about hurting people who learn to break free from their past hurts, their present mistakes, and their declared futures.

Powerful story-telling augments harsh realities and strong characters making the most difficult choices of their lives. First Drop of Rain is riveting, heart-smart, and worth your time. And it’s also worth passing on to a friend who might need to hear that there is hope at the end of every dark tunnel.

I love characters that leap off the page and feel like people I already know. Have you read this sort of character recently? Who was it and what's the title of the novel?
