Chatting about Healing and God's Redeeming Love with Angela D. Meyer

Today we welcome author Angela Meyers who is here to tell us about her upcoming release, Where Healing Starts.

Welcome to Stitches Thru Time, Angela. For those of us who don't have the privilege of knowing you, tell us a bit about yourself.
I grew up in Oklahoma, but after college lived several years in New England as a nanny. That is where I met my husband (who is from Iowa!) Guess we had to go a long way to find each other. We’ve been married 25 years now and have 2 kids. My daughter is in high school and my son serves in the Marines.

I’ve been writing since junior high, although it took a while for me to try my hand at a novel. The Applewood Hill series is the first series I’ve written. Where Healing Starts is the second in that series.

Reading is one of my favorite things to do. And on my wish list to do is to vacation by the ocean and ride in a hot air balloon.

Congratulations on your newest release! What is your story about?
Where Healing Starts continues the story of the Hannigan family which began in the first book of the Applewood Hill series.

After turning his life over to God, Charles Hannigan is seeking to restore the family to wholeness, but Joanna and Blake want no part of their dad’s efforts. Still hurting from his past anger and rejection, each sibling is on a path toward self-destruction.

Blake is unwittingly following in his father’s footsteps, anger punctuating all his relationships. His brief time serving in the Marines led to PTSD, increases his volatility.

Rejected by the only one she ever trusted, Joanna runs to addiction and men to salve her pain. She eventually finds herself with nowhere else to turn and asks their older sister Karen for a job and a place to stay.

Both Blake and Joanna are determined to hang onto their anger, refusing to forgive. They see no reason to trust God. This story is their journey towards healing.

Where did you get the inspiration for your story?
When I was a young adulthood, the early years of being out of the house and on my own, I had numerous conversations with my sisters about why we did life the way we did. We each had similar upbringing, yet each of us turned out so different. What from our childhood influenced certain behaviors and choices?

This morphed into the idea of the Hannigan family. How their upbringing influenced who they became as adults and how they worked past those dysfunctional influences to find God and His grace for redemption.
However, this is not in any way a retelling of my family’s story.

What do you hope folks will take away from your story?
That God can and does redeem anything that we are willing to give to Him.

Do you have a favorite scene in the book? If so, can you tell us a bit about it?
This is a tough one. It’s like asking which one of your kids is your favorite. I can’t tell you too much or it would be a spoiler, but I have to say I like the scene where Joanna steps out of her self-absorption to do something really incredible for her sister. I think this is the point her heart is gripped with both hope and fear of what life could be like if she allows God to heal her wounds from the past.

What do you plan to work on next?
I am currently working on the third book in the series, Where Joy Starts, which continues the story of the Hannigan siblings and God’s redemption in the middle of their family’s dysfunction.

I am also working on a children’s picture book. It’s a Christmas story and hope to have it out this year. This one is an indie project and I have a huge learning curve ahead on self-publishing, so we’ll see how that goes.

Last but not least, apart from writing, what is your favorite creative outlet?
Putting together a creative meal for my family. And I’m not necessarily talking about gourmet meals. But those ones when at first glance there isn’t much to work with in the kitchen. Some of my family’s favorite dishes have been of this variety.

If I had time, I have a collection of crafty kind of things I would enjoy playing with. Maybe after Where Healing Starts releases I will have to take a break for some of those projects.

Wonderful. I love the cover. Thanks so much for being with us today, Angela!

    1. Good morning, Mary! Thanks for stopping by this morning. Isn't it funny how people can go through the same circumstances and yet see it so differently, and react completely different?

  2. Every individual and family has their own issues. Thankfully, God is with each one no matter the paths that are traveled, with God loving the wayward ones back to Him in ways only He can do. It's like reading a scripture or a story even hearing a song or sermon each reader/listener will gain something different. Thank you for sharing, Angela. I look forward to reading Where Healing Starts--as healing does start with God's amazing grace and mercy.

  3. Our family has dealt with an issue for several years and 18 months ago, it erupted into a very serious problem. I know that God is helping my husband and me as we try to care for our only grandchild, a precious 2 1/2 old little girl. Thanks for sharing!
