Author Interview with Caryl McAdoo

It is my pleasure to welcome Stitches Thru Time author Caryl McAdoo for a Sit-Down-Saturday session today! 

Christian, hybrid (Simon & Schuster & Indie) author Caryl McAdoo is currently writing three series, all from a perspective of faith: her historical Texas Romances; the contemporary Red River Romances; and The Generations, her Biblical fiction. The novelist loves singing new songs the Lord gives her, and she paints. In 2008, she and her high school sweetheart-husband Ron moved from the DFW area—home for fifty-five years—to the woods of Red River County. Caryl counts four children and fifteen grandsugars life’s biggest blessings believing all good things come from God. Praying each story gives God glory, she hopes it will also minister His love, mercy, and grace to its readers. Caryl and Ron live in Clarksville, the county seat, in the far northeast corner of the Lone Star State.

What made you decide to become a writer?
I’ve always loved reading and writing…playing with words. As a twelve year old when I wrote a homework assigned essay, I wrote that in the year 2000, I would be a famous writer jetting from planet to planet signing books! It was my husband who first started writing a novel after reading a disappointing book titled Noah. That started him writing and I jumped in to help and then the Lord led us to the DFW Writers Workshop where we were members fifteen years and learned the craft of writing creative fiction. 

Where did the inspiration for your latest book come from?
Inspiration for Daughters of the Heart came from the wonderful young Buckmeyer ladies. Henry and Sue fall in love in book one, Vow Unbroken set in 1832. Twelve years later, her nephew Levi Baylor is the hero in book two Hearts Stolen and visits his Uncle Henry and Aunt Sue—the only mother he’s ever known—for Thanksgiving, and the readers ‘meet’ Sue’s baby girls, only by names really. Then in book three Hope Reborn, set in 1850, the young ladies have a bigger role, especially the oldest, Mary Rachel, who becomes my heroine for book four Sins of the Mothers set in 1851-1853. In the next book five Daughters of the Heart, coming in September, her two oldest sisters Gwendolyn and Cecelia carry the leads together, but you get to know Bonnie better, too.

How does your faith and spirituality work in with your writing?
Always my prayer is that my story gives God glory. In that mindset, I put a lot of my faith and beliefs from studying the Living Word and Holy Spirit’s revelations into all my stories. I work hard to be certain that it all fits in very naturally, and appreciate my reviewers’ comments that I accomplish this well. Saved as a nine-year-old, I accepted Him as my Savior; wooed to love and serve Him more by His Holy Spirit, I made Him my Lord at the age of twenty-five. This month, I turn sixty-five, and by now, only desire to be in the center of His will. I pray my stories touch me readers and lead them into a closer walk with Him.

What are you working on next?
Since I’m taking June off, next is July’s release, volume 3 of The Red River Romances, my contemporary series that I’m really enjoying writing. ONE AND DONE has a Texas Ranger Baseball pitcher hero and a weather girl heroine. Although she lives in Dallas and he lives in a DFW suburb, they do end up in Red River County—that’s what these stories have in common, but each one is a stand-alone book even though characters in one story may have a ‘walk-on’ in another story. J I think it’ll be well received and that if wives can get their husbands to read it, the menfolk will enjoy it, too.
