Captive in Iran - Book Review

Book Review of Captive In Iran:
A Remarkable Story of Hope and Triumph Amid the Horror of Tehran’s Brutal Evin Prison
By Maryam Rostampour and Marziyeh Amirizdeh

Review by Shirley Raye Redmond

While I love to read historical fiction and mysteries, there’s a time to read nonfiction also—to keep it real, to become better acquainted with how other believers are coping in their world. This book was eye-opening, and you’ll find yourself rooting for Maryam Rostampour and her friend Marziyeh.

These two women end up in prison for holding Bible study in their Tehran apartment. They knew they were putting their lives on the line, but they did it anyway—for the sake of the gospel. Before being imprisoned, they started two secret house churches and distributed more than 20,000 New Testaments to fellow countrymen. They were arrested in 2009 and imprisoned in a notorious women’s prison. The Holy Spirit inspired what they did there. Captive in Iran is a book full of hope. You will rejoice to learn how true believers can bring salt and light into the darkest dungeons. As Anne Graham Lotz (daughter of evangelist Billy Graham) says in the foreword of
the book, “Jesus “didn’t just carry them through somehow—he carried them through TRIUMPHANTLY.”

The book has a happy ending, so don’t be afraid to read it. Both women were freed in November 2009. They now live in the USA in the state of Georgia and have Americanized their names to Miriam and Marci. You will rejoice in their story of faith.
