Librarian + Lumberjack = Book 3

Good fifth day! Caryl McAdoo here, pleased to be with you!

As children, who remembers reading all about Paul Bunyan and his famous blue ox, Babe? I loved their stories and the over-sized hero--sixty-three axe handles tall! From Maine he came to the upper Midwest then on to the Pacific Northwest clearing timber for farm land.

So when my friend Carrie Fancett Pagels started this series, I was thrilled to be back in the land of the lumberjacks again!

And this fun, big-hearted author has just released book three, Lilacs for Juliana, in The Christy Lumber Camp Series. I must admit to loving family sagas as well, and you get to know the Christy family well! You'll want to read book one, The Fruitcake Challenge (a Selah Award Finalist), and Book two as well, The Lumberjacks' Ball.

This charming novel (at 51K words) will grab your interest and can be easily read in a day. You probably will finish it in one sitting, as you won't want to put it down. It's full of love and laughter with family obligations and misunderstandings a plenty to keep the librarian and her lumberjack apart!

All three of the lumber camp stories are full of romance and comedy, but this one may be my favorite yet :) If you've not read any of Carrie's stories--I love her Return to Shirley Plantation: A Civil War Romance, too--you'll find you have a new favorite author to keep up with!

  1. I didn't ready any Paul Bunyan stories, but I do remember Disney had a lovely TV show highlighting Paul Bunyan.

  2. Caryl, thank you for all of the information on Carrie Fancett Pagels. I have only recently become aware of her books and you have built them up beautifully. Comedy is a favorite with any of my romance reading.

I love all of the tall tales of our youth. My favorites being Paul Bunyan and Johnny Appleseed. I remember books and the cartoons. In fact, I was so excited to share the cartoon with my kids when they were younger, but their reaction was not as elated as mine. Come On!!

  3. Yay, thank you, Terrill! Another thing I enjoy about Carrie's books is that they're so well researched! Yes! Johnny Appleseed! Hadn't thought about him in a while! Times were so much simpler then. Surely our generation IS the chosen generation for having seen the amazing changes in one lifetime as we've been afforded. I usually read horse stories, but I suppose Paul Bunyan was my first book hero crush! :) Blessings!

    1. Given that MANY of the men near where I lived dressed and resembled a normal sized Paul Bunyan (think dark hair, dark eyes, burly, read and black checked shirts and often of French background!) I guess I thought that was COMMON until I moved to South Carolina! Shock and surprise--all those blonde haired and blue eyed people!
Paul Bon Jean, or Bunyan as he was later called in print, was a mythical man whose stories filled the lumber camps! Hu

Caryl, I am grateful for what my children can afford and achieve. Yet, I also feel, as parents, my husband and I have to be extra diligent in preventing self-entitlement in our children. I appreciate what my grandmother and mom had to go through growing up in the early and mid 20th century. In her 70's, my is still one of the hardest working women I know. She raised my sister and I on her own, we were never without, and she has never been in serious debt. I think being a product of those times taught amazing values.

And Carrie, I can relate to where you grew up and how the men looked. I grew up in Washington close to Mt. Rainier and a large number of my uncles and cousins worked (and work) in the logging industry. As hobbies, they would hunt, trap and fish. I'm familiar with that Paul Bunyun look. Don't forget the suspenders!
