Be a Kid Again

Howdy y'all! Crystal here. When was the last time you let your hair down and acted like a kid again? Well, I did recently. (Okay, there are some who say I do that plenty, but I'm not talking to them right now. ;) Just kidding. :) ) Anyway, I visited a museum the other day that history buffs of all ages would've gotten a kick out of. They not only had the history of Abilene, Kansas; they had old buildings to tour, a telephone history exhibit, and to top it all off, a carousel built in the late 1800s/early 1900s by C.W. Parker, "the Amusement King."

I got to ride the repaired, steam-powered, track-operated carousel. Yep, I said steam powered--and that's with the original steam engine! The carousel had 12 pairs of horses and 4 chariots on its 50-foot platform.

The coolest and most unique aspect about this carousel was that it's not like what most carousels people relate to. It doesn't have poles to hold onto. The horses have reins and stirrups and they rock back and forth like the gait of a real horse. How cool is that?!

If you ever get a chance to visit Abilene, Kansas, I highly encourage you to check out the Heritage Center at the Dickinson Co. Museum.

I'm sharing a few more pics on my blog today. Come check it out if you'd like to see more.

When was the last time you let your hair down, so to speak, and had a day of fun? I'd love to hear about it.

  2. I have always loved carousel horses.

A day at the beach saw me let my hair down & play. So much fun.

  3. I love carousels. I ride them any time I have an opportunity. We went to England recently where I had lots of fun days.

    1. Did you ride a carousel in England? That'd be cool. Any trip to England sounds fun. I've never been. :)

  4. Oh, fun! And right up my alley. I always tell my grand boys, they might have another grandmother but I'll always be the "funnest" one they have. They grin in agreement. Hmmm. May have to make another trip to Kansas! Lol

    1. Definitely take them. It was great. And there's nothing wrong with being dubbed the fun one. :) I'd rather be that than a stick in the mud.
